Every January 1st, Haitians around the world gather around a bowl of Soup Joumou to celebrate freedom. Here's how HUAP carried that tradition into our communities this year.
Haiti's Independence Day is an annual Haitian holiday. It is celebrated on January 1st to commemorate Haiti's declaration of independence in 1804. As Haitians worldwide express their joy and patriotism, they gather to enjoy "Soup Joumou/Squash Soup," their traditional dish of independence.
Hand United Against Poverty (HUAP) helps celebrate this momentous day by raising awareness about the hunger epidemic and poverty in the Haitian community. We donated "Soup Joumou/Squash Soup" food ingredients to extreme-needs communities and had a team of volunteers to help organize this charitable event.
Thank you to our donors and volunteers. When I think about this event and our impact every year, I can only think of how proud I am of everyone involved.
